Vanguard offers comprehensive college admission information and preparation for all students, both middle school and high school students.
Kari Weileder serves as the Director of College Counseling and Dean of Students. She guides and teaches all students about their college and career options, starting when they are in 7th grade. She directs the juniors and seniors through the college admission process, scholarship applications, and financial aid. She is the lead instructor of the College Prep course that all juniors are required to take.
College Prep is a required course that hones each student’s skills for taking college entrance exams such as the SAT and ACT. Members of Vanguard’s English and Math departments team-teach the course with Mrs. Weileder. Students learn about essay writing, resumes, interviewing skills, college applications, scholarships, financial aid and life after high school.
Mrs. Weileder holds a Master of Arts degree in Teaching from Minnesota State University and a Master of Arts degree in Psychotherapy & School Counseling from Adler Graduate School. She has over fifteen years of experience in the education field as a Coach, Teacher, College Counselor, Parent Coach and Adjunct Professor. Her higher education counseling not only includes classroom teaching and individual counseling, but also educating students and parents through the entire higher education process. Her experience also includes all types of school systems, in three states and internationally.
She is a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the Texas Association for College Admission Counseling, the American School Counselor Association and the Heart of Texas Counseling Association.
She makes frequent visits to college campuses around the nation and attends state and national conferences to network with college admissions personnel.
Admissions representatives from colleges and universities come to Vanguard regularly for information sessions with all juniors and seniors.
Vanguard has produced 41 National Merit Semifinalists in the past 17 years. Forty of them were selected as National Merit Finalists.
One-hundred percent of Vanguard graduates attend a college or university, many of which are highly selective institutions such as Rice University, Stanford, New York University, Princeton University, the University of Chicago, Georgetown University, Davidson College, Duke University, and the United States Naval Academy.
The 43 members of the Class of 2013 & 2014 have an SAT average score of 1955 (critical reading, math and writing combined.) The average score in Texas is 1841. The 36 members of the combined graduating classes of 2012 and 2013 received more than $5.2 million in academic scholarship offers to colleges and universities around the nation.
