Students and teachers left the books behind on March 30 and headed into the community for a day of lending a helping hand. Emma’s Day is Vanguard’s annual community service day and is named in memory of Emma Welter, a student who was an avid volunteer with the Waco Humane Society.
Service projects this year included a wide variety of destinations and activities.
- Tutoring, reading, interacting at public and private elementary schools
- Making bookmarks for local public libraries
- Making blankets hospital patients in association with Project Linus
- Creating cards for military service men and women
- Cleaning up grounds and storage areas on campus
- Learning to be better drivers through a visit to Hillcrest Hospital’s Reality Education for Drivers program
“A lot of us had fun volunteering at Mountainview School this year,” said freshman Macallan Goaley. “It’s kind of contagious. The more fun people have, the more they want to donate their time. Emma’s Day is a great way for Vanguard students to learn the joy of volunteering.”
