Students, faculty and staff sat at attention on Veterans’ Day, Nov. 11. The Wonderful Wednesday assembly was complete with presentation of the colors by Boy Scouts and a full house reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag.

Mr. Paul Marable, an officer in World War II, told his story of being captured and subsequently imprisoned in a German POW camp. As Mr. Marable described his battlefield experiences, the Vanguard family listened attentively to a lesson demonstration rigor, respect, and responsibility.

A cast of comical characters, six dedicated faculty members, and an auditorium filled with spectators. The combination made for two successful performances of “Laughing Stock” on Nov. 6 and 7 in the Jeannette Jaworski Center on campus.

A New England summer stock barn theater sets the stage for Charles Morey’s light-hearted farce in a sentimental story about the bonds that form among actors in a production. Comedy ensues as The Playhouse, a rustic New England summer theater, begins a repertory season of Dracula, Hamlet, and Charley’s Aunt.

Energetic acting and creative direction sent the audience into round after round of laughter throughout the play. Two thumbs up for the Drama Club in its first play of the 2010-2011 season.

An American Chemical Society’s Hach High School Chemistry Grant was recently awarded to 100 schools across the United States, and Vanguard was one of the recipients. Thanks to the grant money, the Science Department purchased new balances for the chemistry lab.

The balances have 0.01g precision compared to the older ones that had a 0.1g precision. The grant is a part of an ongoing effort to provide the very best science facilities and equipment for Vanguard students. Classes will open in the new chemistry and physics labs in the Buddy and Virginia Bostick Building starting with second semester.

Representatives from extracurricular clubs, service organizations, and honor societies came to the podium during the first official Wonderful Wednesday all-school assembly Sept. 8. They told students about activities and requirements for membership in 16 Vanguard groups.

“There’s something for everyone on this list,” said Dena Johns, director of studies. “All clubs aren’t open to all grades, but many of them are. If you have an idea for a club that isn’t on the list, please talk with one of your teachers about starting a new group.”
