Vanguard College Preparatory School will be hosting ten to twelve International students beginning in the fall of 2013. These students will be joining us from the People’s Republic of China and from the Republic of Korea. While here, they will need a place to stay with a “host family”.

And so our search begins for qualified host families. Any family in the Waco area could qualify. The family does not necessarily need to have a child currently enrolled in Vanguard but that would be a plus.

Do you know of a loving family that has a spare room available in their home? Would they consider inviting an International student to stay with them during their high school experience in the U.S.? If so, you could receive a $150 referral fee if the family is approved as a host.

Participating families will be offered a stipend of $900 per month. The students will have their own insurance and spending money. The host family should speak English at home and ensure that the student eats 3 nutritious meals per day. The family must also provide a room for exclusive use by the student. Being able to involve the student in family events and activities is a big plus.

China-Sophia-Skype2-WebThe host family will be provided with training and 24/7 emergency support throughout the school year, as well as regular group activities for you and the students to share with other participating families.

Vanguard is working with Green Planet, an educational service company that specializes in bringing on-the-ground support to International student programs at U.S. high schools to qualify host families. If you would like to know more about the program visit: http://www.gphomestay.com

Spring has Sprung and that means it is time for Vanguard’s annual day of clean up.

Flower sale raised $1300.00

The flower beds have been marked and tilled and the water hoses put in place, all in preparation for Emma’s Day. The day named to honor Vanguard student Emma Welter who died in a tragic automobile accident. This year, Emma’s Day has been set for Wednesday April 10th.

“It is a chance for the entire student body to come out and give a little back to the school that has given so much to them,” said Vanguard parent Karina Deaver.

Organizers of Vanguard’s flower sale say the annual event brought in around $3,000. The money will be used to purchase landscaping for Vanguard’s 8.5 acre campus.

So grab your work gloves, garden spade and green thumb and join us on April 10.

We will remember Emma and work hard to keep Vanguard beautiful.

For the past few months Vanguard’s director of technology, Joe Flowers has been in virtual contact via the Internet with his most accomplished multimedia graduate.

Scott Silver somewhere in Morocco during filming

Scott Silver somewhere in Morocco during filming

Scott Silver (class of 2002) is a founding partner of Los Angeles based Silvatar Media and has produced Hollywood thrillers “Removal” and “Prototype”. Despite being well produced, directed and featuring superb acting neither film garnered full theatrical distribution.

Over the last several months, Scott has been sending Joe updates from his latest, as yet “unnamed” film project set in Egypt but shot in Morocco. Joe has been sharing these posts with his multimedia class at Vanguard and using them as a teaching tool.

On Wednesday, Scott and his wife Laurel stopped by and were able to visit with Joe in person.

“We were shooting in Morocco for two months and then headed to Paris to edit for three,” said Silver. “I have not been home in over a year and it is great to see my family again and have the chance to catch up with Joe.”

All of Scott’s hard work and talent is apparently paying off in a very big way. Scott recently received word that his latest project will be released by Twentieth Century Fox for theatrical release across the country.

“Overall there is a lot to like about this movie but I’ve got to tell you, my favorite part now is seeing that familiar 20th Century Fox logo fade in,” said Scott. “Laurel and I have been hearing that play over and over in our heads and we never get tired of it.”

Look for the film “coming to a theater near you” in the fall of 2013.

Not bad. Not bad at all.
