JULY ALUMNI CONNECTION
The Olmsted Brothers
Vanguard College Preparatory School alumni Ricky and Randy, Class of 2008 and 2011 respectively, have gone on to wonderful things since graduating high school. Both are thankful for the college preparatory education they received, have a love for the sciences and are attending medical school. Excellence runs in the family.
Vanguard alumnus Ricky Olmsted graduated in 2008. He attended the University of Miami where he received his bachelor’s degree in economics. Olmsted then received his Master’s of Medical Science from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. While living and studying at UNTHSC in Fort Worth, Olmsted lived with fellow Class of 2008 Vanguard alumnus Lincoln Downs who completed the same graduate program. Olmsted will shortly begin his third year of medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Olmsted writes that, “Since graduating from Vanguard, I’ve had a leg up on the other students in my classes. This was most apparent while I was an undergraduate when it came to writing essays. Mrs. Spain was very passionate about her work. She made sure that students had grammar and writing mechanics down cold, which were some things with which I noticed that other students in my college classes struggled. Freshman biology and AP Biology, both of which were taught by veteran teacher Mrs. Aline Leslie, are where I discovered a true passion for science. Her classes laid a great foundation for material I’m still using today.”
Favorite Vanguard memory: “There are too many to count, but some of the best times I had at Vanguard were spent in the senior lounge with the other members of the Class of ‘08. We were known to have some pretty heated video game competitions after school in the lounge!”
Advice for current students: “Take advantage of the many educational opportunitites presented to you.” He advises students to be thankful for the freedoms Vanguard affords, but to also have a laser focus on doing well academically, which will lay the groundwork for future, continued success.
Vanguard alumnus Randy Olmsted graduated in 2011. Olmsted received his Bachelor of Arts in Plan II at the University of Texas at Austin, which is an interdisciplinary liberal arts honors program. His senior research centered on the social determinants of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and the ethics of the resultant changes in blood donation requirements. Olmsted is now in medical school at the Baylor College of Medicine at Houston.
Olmsted writes that, “I have fond memories of my time in freshman and AP biology with Mrs. Aline Leslie. I know that her classes were what sparked my interest in medicine and the sciences. I will never forget the penguin on her PowerPoint presentations exclaiming, ‘This will be important!’”
He adds that, “from a more concrete standpoint, the coursework in my first and second year at college was remarkably similar to Vanguard’s curriculum in both content and difficulty. I was able to succeed in college thanks to teachers like Mrs. Ferretter, Mr. Johnson, Mrs. Johns, Mrs. Richie, Coach Seifert and many others who instilled solid critical reasoning, essay writing, and analytical skills in me from the start of my time at Vanguard.”
Though he had difficulty pinning down just one, Randy said that his favorite Vanguard memory had to be the senior trip to Disney World. “It was a really nice way to end our six years together at Vanguard.”
Advice for current students: “Vanguard has so many extracurricular opportunities available for students… Take advantage of them! Try debate one year or a new sport the next. You just might find an unknown passion. Also, for the juniors and seniors: check out Plan II at UT. I had such an amazing time in that program, and I did not even know about it until shortly before graduating!”
