The Alumni Connection – September

screen-shot-2016-09-26-at-12-36-56-pmMichele Wucker’s journalism career has taken her all over the world, but she has never forgotten where it all began: Vanguard College Preparatory School.  Michele graduated from Vanguard in 1985 and went on to Rice University where she majored in French and Policy Studies. Later, she received her Master’s Degree in International Affairs from Columbia University, and she continues to be a lifelong learner.

Starting out, Michele worked for the Santo Domingo News and the Milwaukee Sentinel before becoming a freelance journalist. Her resume also includes working as a financial journalist and editor at Dow Jones and International Financing Review.  Following her commentary for various media outlets – including CNN, NPR, MSNBC and Newsweek – on the Haitian earthquake in 2010, Michele was honored by Vanguard with the Distinguished Alumna award.

After 23 years of living and working in New York City, Michele moved to Chicago in 2014 to be closer to her Milwaukee-based family, including former Vanguard Headmaster Ed Wucker. There she began her own businesses, helping decision-makers address problems before they reach a crisis stage.

Throughout her many career successes, Michele has been able to look back to where it all began with a strong foundation.

“Vanguard taught me how to think critically and creatively,” she said, “especially Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Davis, who gave me a great start with the skills I needed to become a successful writer.”

Michele’s latest endeavor is her third book, The Gray Rhino: How to Recognizescreen-shot-2016-09-26-at-12-22-36-pm and Act on the Obvious Dangers We Ignore. The book has received several wonderful endorsements from business giants like Unilever CEO Paul Polman and World Economic Forum Chairman Klaus Schwab. The governor of the Central Bank of the Philippines even referred to “gray rhinos” in one of his recent speeches.

The Gray Rhino can be purchased from major booksellers. A link to learn more can be found at
