Vanguard College Preparatory School in Waco, TX has announced that it is adding sixman football to its athletic program beginning in the Fall of 2011. The school will be fielding both a middle-school and varsity team.

Vanguard’s request to add football has received the approval of the governing body for high school athletics, TAPPS (Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools). The school will be competing in division 1, district 3.

In commenting on the addition of Six-Man Football, Vanguard’s Athletic Director Michelle Basden added, “There have been students asking for football, both among our current students and prospective students. As a Vanguard Alumna, I’m proud that it has now become a reality.”

Football reflects the third major addition to the Vanguard sports program in the last two years, following on the heels of Girls’ Volleyball and Co-ed Soccer. The school now offers 16 varsity programs and boasts a long history of athletic success. According to Head of School Bill Borg, Vanguard’s 36 State Championships in six sports (cross country, basketball, tennis, track, golf, and softball) represent the most team titles of any private or parochial school in Central Texas.

“At Vanguard, we are committed to developing the whole student”, said Borg. “Unlike some schools, we welcome any student who wishes to be a member of any athletic team, and this practice certainly hasn’t stood in the way of unparalleled success for our athletics program.”
