Viking Voice – March 2016

A note from Head of School – Bill Borg

Vanguard Parents and Students,

Wonderful things are happening at Vanguard College Preparatory School. We are halfway through the second semester, and I have experienced significant growth in students’ academic prowess and moral character. Vanguard parents provide unmatched support for their students.  As we approach the final months of the school year, I invite you to share in my effort to encourage our students to finish the school year strong.

Admissions and enrollment season is in full swing. The 2016-2017 school year marks Vanguard’s eighth straight year of enrollment increase. Vanguard is consistently showing manageable growth while maintaining the high level of academic integrity that sets us apart. For returning families, we appreciate you submitting the RenWeb Re-Enrollment packet in a timely manner.  Each and every student is key to the success of our school

A small contingency of teachers and staff recently attended a three-day National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) conference in San Francisco. They studied innovative trends in education, how to effectively incorporate technology into the classroom, and methods to bolster the various support systems that the highest quality independent schools require. We are very excited about the information they have gathered and brought back to our school. Investing in our faculty is crucial, as it directly benefits our students. We have already implemented much of what our faculty and staff learned at this conference and look forward to reaping the benefits of
their sharpened skills and knowledge.

Spring Events

Our Bingo, BBQ, and Bon Voyage event was a marvelous success. The event raised funds critical to the success of our school. Per usual, a great time was had by all. I want to take this opportunity to thank all involved in making this event an enormous success. This year’s event was unique, as it honored two veteran, retiring teachers, Mrs. Dena Johns and Mr. John Perdichi.

Seniors/College Acceptance

We are so proud to see our seniors’ years of hard work culminate in multiple acceptances to prestigious universities from the east coast to the west coast. I look forward to giving much more detailed information about the Vanguard Class of 2016’s college statistics at the end of the year. I know this is an exciting and emotional time for our senior parents.

Mock Trial

Vanguard’s Mock Trial team had a marvelous showing at their competition this year, advancing to the semi-finals of their recent competition at Baylor Law School. The countless hours the team spent preparing for competition were evident. Their high levels of critical thinking, ability to synthesize large amounts of information in a short amount of time, and rhetorical skills contributed to their success.

Soccer and Basketball Teams

I would like to congratulate our Varsity soccer team on their first ever qualification for playoffs. This year’s team demonstrated a level of teamwork that was unparalleled in previous years. They had a wonderful season and we look forward to their continued success in coming years. Basketball also had a wonderful showing this year. The highlight of the season for me is always our annual game against Gainesville. As in previous years, both teams showed exceptional sportsmanship and respectful competition during the game.

Spring Sports Team

We are excited about our spring sports programs that are starting up. Come out and support our Viking Spring Sports – Golf, Track, Tennis, Baseball, and Softball.

Viking Crew Golf Tournament

I highly encourage involvement in our 18th annual Viking Crew Golf Tournament fundraiser. This is a chance play a round of golf with fellow Vanguard community supporters while raising funds for our athletic programs.

I wish you a safe, fun, and relaxing Spring Break.

Yours In Education,

Bill Borg
