No matter what’s handed to him, Hilton H. Howell, Jr. isn’t afraid to tackle it head-on. The Vanguard alumnus is the Chairman,
President, and CEO of Gray Television as well as Atlantic American Corporation, an insurance holding company. Additionally, he
is the Chair of Bankers Fidelity Life, and the Director, E.V.P. and general counsel of Delta Life Insurance Co. and Delta Fire &
Casualty Insurance Co.
With all those titles, it would be easy to imagine being constantly overwhelmed, but Hilton has a good strategy. “Vanguard
taught me to work ahead and be prepared,” he said. “It also taught me to be competitive.” He has fond memories of competing
with his fellow classmates in history courses.
Hilton received a B.A. from Baylor University, then went on to Baylor Law School, earning his J.D. Cum lLaude, and earned
an MBA from the University of Texas – Austin. He practiced law for a few years before joining the broadcasting and insurance
industries.
Although his work keeps him busy, Hilton finds it very satisfying. “What I enjoy about my career is building something
important,” he said. “And I enjoy the people I work with.”He hopes that current Vanguard students are also able to find ways to
make their lives enjoyable on all levels.
“Work hard; play hard,” he said.
Hilton and Robin Robinson Howell have four children, Hilton Hatchett III, Alston Elizabeth, Julia Bailey and Anna Louise.
