Dear Vanguard Friends,
As you may know, Carol Spain, who taught at Vanguard for twenty-seven years, retired in May 2012. Over that time, she touched many lives, influenced countless academic endeavors, and impacted the Vanguard community in ways that have yet to show themselves. In light of her remarkable career, we are pleased to honor her with the announcement of the Distinguished Faculty Scholarship Fund.
The Distinguished Faculty Scholarship Fund has been established not only to reward exceptional students but also to honor any and all current and former Vanguard faculty. Founded in honor of Carol Spain, this award ultimately gives all faculty members the opportunity to continue teaching the best and brightest that Waco and the surrounding area has to offer. The scholarship, announced at the awards ceremony each May, will be given to a current Vanguard student, chosen by the faculty, as a reward for past achievement and as an incentive for continuing to excel at Vanguard. The student granted this distinction will be one who displays character traits that embody Carol herself: loyalty, intense dedication to educational pursuits, kindness, and a selfless concern for others.
The founding of the Distinguished Faculty Scholarship Fund coincides with Carol’s retirement as tribute to her years of dedication. She, however, was not alone in her service. As many have done in the past, current faculty members work tirelessly to uphold Vanguard’s tradition of teaching excellence. Therefore, individual contributions to the Distinguished Faculty Scholarship Fund can be made in honor of any faculty member, whether former or current. Moreover, these contributions need not conform to rigid guidelines or timetables. They may be large or small, and they may be given at any time during the year—perhaps even as a birthday or holiday present for a deserving teacher. We hope that with gifts from you and other generous supporters we will be able to continue to provide the opportunity for students to pursue their academic dreams at Vanguard.
The Vanguard Foundation, which was established in 1992 as a permanent endowment for the school, will administrate the Distinguished Faculty Scholarship Fund. One-half of your donation will go to a permanent endowment fund for scholarships and one-half will go for immediate scholarships. Please make your check payable to Vanguard Foundation and complete the information on the enclosed card that you will return with your check. Letters of acknowledgement will be sent to you, the school, and to the faculty member in whose honor your donation was made.
Thank you for your continued support of Vanguard.
The Vanguard Foundation is tax-exempt under Section 509(a)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and gifts are tax deductible for Federal income tax purposes under Section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) of the Code.
