The Vanguard High School Tennis Team won the 2021 TAPPS Team Tennis State Championship today at Waco Regional Tennis Center, defeating Tyler All Saints in the last match of the day. The team defeated Denton Calvary 5-0, Grace Preparatory School 5-0, and Tyler All Saints 5-1 to win the title.
The Vikings started the day playing Denton Calvary Academy. The Vikings lost only 4 games in the doubles with wins by Karriss Kuhl/Aubry Carroll, Karoline Horner/McKenna Lowrey, Zach Henry/Aldo Ibarra, and Hyrum Blackwelder/Seth Blackwelder. The clinching point came from a decisive win by Aldo in singles, making it 5-0 Vikings. The Vikings then played Grace Preparatory Academy in the second match of the day also winning all four doubles matches. Wins were scored by Karriss Kuhl/Aubry Carroll, Grace Yoon/Avery Haynes, Zach Henry/Aldo Ibarra, and Hyrum Blackwelder/Seth Blackwelder. The clinching match was made by Zach Henry singles. The third match of the day was against the Tyler All Saints, who won the 4A Boys and Girls Team State Champions in the spring. The doubles matches were close, but the Vikings scored wins by Grace/Avery, Zach/Aldo, and Hyrum/Seth. Needing two more points to win, all four singles matches went on court. Zach Henry was first off with his second 6-0, 6-0 win for the day. The clinching point was made by Aldo 6-1, 6-4. The win meant back-to-back TAPPS State Team Tennis titles for the Vikings. The team will play in an extra match against the Division 1/2A team tomorrow.
